I'm glad this picture came out because it captures a very interesting cultural exchange that Joaquin enjoyed at least three times with these ladies during our visit to the NC Museum of Art last month. The only thing they appeared to be able to say in English was "Joaquin," which they would repeat over and over again as they poked at his feet and belly whilst giggling.

My favorite part of yesterday occurred just before midnight, when Amy and I went down to the garage to check on the three chicks that we are taking care of this week. Through the garage window the orange-yellow glow of the warming lamp against the white wall made their little house look like a hearth fire. As we quietly approached to see if they were sleeping we realized that the chicks were excitedly feasting on the moths and cockroaches that had been attracted to the warmth and light. Amy and I each drew up a chair. We sat down and watched the chicks running back and forth, chirping playfully and contentedly. We sat there for half an hour, smiling and laughing while we imagined what the chicks must be saying to each other as they snapped up the bugs with their little yellow beaks, running from one end of the box to the other. I think Amy and I were both thinking about the same thing as we watched those baby poultry brothers at play.

There is this "friend" of mine on Facebook who is really more of an idol. She is an artist whom I admire greatly and when I asked to be her friend, she accepted. Today, as I was browsing her page to view a recent sculpture of hers, I came across this quote:

I feel like this is an apt description of the love of a parent. Not necessarily a new parent like me, but a parent who has worked and sacrificed for years and years to help his or her child survive, develop, learn and flourish. I am only now realizing the difficult job that is parenthood. That my mom and dad never told me how hard it was (and I know I was a handful at times!) reveals how gracious and selfless that love can be.

While in Buffalo recently, we made a day trip to the cottage in Crystal Beach, Canada. Joaquin was curious/excited/cautious about his first time in Lake Erie. He liked the water, but maintained a healthy grip on whomever he was with the entire time. Benny's experience with the water went something like this: Play in the sand and look out at the water with suspicion. Walk to the shoreline and allow feet to get wet (run back to sand laughing.) Walk a little ways into the water holding adult hands, laughing but hesitant. Splash and jump and throw self about in water with ever increasing zeal. Splash and jump and frolic and squeal with delight all the while asking mom, dad, Poppy, Nana to take him further and further out into the Lake. In the end, he didn't want to come out of the water at all and was swimming on his own close to the shoreline. It was a ball watching him. Here are a few pictures from the outing. (Nana has all the good ones on her camera.)

It's always warm and sunny at Crystal Beach. Unless it's cold, gray and snowy.

Be cautious when walking through this gated community! You never know when you may run into round-headed professionals recklessly ambling about. We carry bells to let them know we're coming so we don't startle them.

In the Kitchen With Nemo

I really love baking. The artist in me particularly gets into the aesthetic aspect of the process: the decorating. (Friends from college jr. year may remember a Vincent Van Gogh cake which was turned in for an assignment on "high art" vs. "low art.") Nowadays, I especially like creating a delectable goody that I know will tickle Benny Ray's fancy. So this year, for his third birthday I created marine life cookies and cupcakes with a special emphasis on sharks (B's current obsession) and, of course, Nemo. The results may have been more pleasing to the tongue than the eye (day-um they were good) but Benny and his little friends delighted in biting the heads and tails off of sharks, dolphins and fish. I, as always, filled up on frosting and broken cookies as I worked away in the kitchen. Incidentally, the butter cookies had orange zest and a little whole wheat flour which added delicious flavors and the cupcakes were made with many yummy ounces of Ghirardelli chocolate and decaf espresso. Cookies and cupcakes were topped with butter cream frosting. Mmmm, mmmm.

I was just informed by my sweet hubs that this series of photos might "make me want to cry." Nevertheless, please enjoy a darling paring of Neko and Benny photos from 2007 with photos of the duo again in 2010. We begin with a visit to Atlanta in February '07. Neko is a year old and Benny is 7 1/2 months.

And here they are again, in 2010 when the D-Ks visitied the Amago stead in Chapel Hill. In this first photo, Benny and Neko appear to be out of their ever-lovin'-minds. We think this image captures the frenzied boiling point of fifteen minutes of psychotic repetition of" "Bye, bye poopy face, toilet head Brandy" or "Bye, bye poopy face, toilet head daddy" followed by hysterical laughing and rolling around on the ground or couch. This is the moment we believe their true love became everlasting.

We look forward to more Neko Belle/Benny Ray vacations in September, October and November of this year!

and listen to some fine free form blues jazz jamming. We watched the

Benny and I took a walk around our new neighborhood today after
dinner. We haven't told Momma yet that we saw this really beautiful
centipede walking around our front yard hunting ants. Later we saw a
deer. Then, on our way home, we saw a large spider lose a death match

So, after a month of packing and a week of really really packing, we are just about ready for the moving van tomorrow morning. We'll be spending tomorrow night at our good friends' house (thanks, Kara and Jim and Megan and Seamus!) and then Wednesday will see us on the road to Chapel Hill. It's a twelve hour drive so we'll take it easy (as easy as you can with two kids under 3) and drive as far as we can the first day and hope to make it home (yes, home!) on Thursday afternoon/evening. It's been an emotional day today, our last day in our beloved (now former) home. I can't believe we're leaving. And I can't wait to see what our life will be like in North Carolina. Bring it on!

Amagomundi staff spent their first Easter ever at their house in South Bend. Ironically, two days before Easter the house officially became someone else's. So, in reality Easter 2010 was spent in a rented house on Lafayette Blvd. Sniff sniff. Alas.

After a long day of house-hunting we enjoyed a frolic in our hotel pool. Benny remembered how to kick, blow bubbles and hold his breath under water. He even successfully jumped into the water from the side of the pool a few times. His super cute swim instructors Kat and Madison made quite an impression last summer.
Joaquin seemed intrigued by his first pool experience. There were some curious smiles, but he also maintained a firm grasp on mom's neck the whole time.

We were lucky to be among the eleven people Mark and Kristin had over for paella last night. Amy says, on our way home, with intention: "That was the best paella I've had since Spain." Ouch. It was good, I must admit. But the best since Spain? She really knows how to hurt a guy.

After eating paella we feted the birthday girl and the birthday boy. Oh. And Consuelo, who has come out of retirement.

Six candles successfully extinguished. Say that five times fast after five glasses of Ondarre rioja.

Consuelo had a good night, too.

Mama A's been sick the past few days. As is the case with fevers, she alternated between shivering chills when the fever was high and then massive, pouring sweats when the fever broke. This cycle carried on for a couple days. Today Mama A decided she felt well enough to take a long, hot shower. Deeeeelightful. Relishing in her newly cleaned, fresh self and feeling somewhat more energetic, Mama A creeps into Baby J's room post nap. As is custom, Baby J squeals with delight, Mama A squeals back, much squealing ensues and then Mama A begins one of her favorite baby snuggle acts. She lifts Baby J high above her head and then, lowering him slightly to face level, does the motorboat on his belly. Baby J giggles gleefully at this maneuver while post-shower Mama comes to the slow realization that she is rubbing her just-bathed face and hair in her son's urine-soaked onesie. (hyphens anyone?) It seems nearly impossible to escape baby/toddler output these days. Too bad Papa A didn't post anything about the morning he got smeared in poo poo just before work, because then there would be a pretty cool link right here.

During the babies' nap time, Daddy shaved his beard and moustache. Upon awaking--at his Mother's suggestion--Benny runs out into the hall to give him a hug and a kiss. As the smile on his face begins to fade he stands back, looks at his Daddy intently, and asks his Mother, "Is that Daddy?"

Between A's art classes and showing our house, over the course of this morning/early afternoon we've had about eleven different people in and out of our house. And that doesn't include friends and family. Kara and Jim and the twins are coming over for pizza tonight and Nana is here helping with the kids this week!
