Brook and John
Our friends Brook and John appeared on the front page of the South Bend Tribune today. The photo above is from an article on how South Bend has continued to be hammered by the mortgage crisis. They are bundling loose sticks while volunteering to do yard-work on some vacant homes on Diamond Avenue and the surrounding South Bend neighborhood.
Like the rest of the nation, St. Joseph County, and especially South Bend, has been ravaged by foreclosures. Countywide, they more than quadrupled from 2001 through 2007, rising from 468 to 1,944.
South Bend's increase was comparable, with foreclosures climbing from 337 in 2001 to 1,358 in 2007.
South Bend's share of the county's foreclosures also has held steady, falling just slightly, from 72 percent to 69 percent during that time.
To give you a sense of scale, according to the 2006 census the population of South Bend was just above 105,000.
